The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, established in
1943, is one of the major divisions of the Shijitan Hospital. It has
been striving to become the orthopaedic program of choice by
providing high-quality orthopaedic care, cutting-edge scientific
research, and superior education to the next generation of
caregivers. Currently, the division is under the leadership of
Professor Wanpeng Xu, --a renowned orthopaedic surgeon who has
devoted himself to potentially life-saving new therapies and
leading-edge clinical trials ever since 1977. By specializing in
surgical services related exclusively to bone tumors, Professor Xu
has actively participated in the clinical research of bone tumors
treatment. He is committed to keeping pace with the latest
international techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery, and is gifted in
strategically and creatively applying these techniques to his work.
His expertise and dedication is evident by his exceptional record of
tackling the most difficult orthopaedic diseases.
The orthopaedic surgical team at Shijitan Hospital is a
well-organized team working towards excellence in physician
integrity, service efficiency, and clinical quality. The team
comprises one professor and chair, seven interim chairs, seven
attending, and one resident. Two of the team members have earned a
doctor’s degree, while another two hold a master’s degree. This is a
team willing to think beyond the current wisdom, and to embrace the
possibility of new directions. This is a team full of life, full of
hope, and full of promise. Apart from routine procedures, the team
specializes in the treatment of bone tumors and surgery on senior
patients. We have an enduring track record for providing the
top-tier surgical services in China. We perform 600 major
orthopaedic surgeries annually, including a large number of
predictably difficult and high-risk cases. At the same time we
maintained one of the highest cure rate and survival rate in the
nation.
Until now, more than 1000 total joint replacement surgeries have
been successfully performed. And more than 2000 surgeries on spinal
diseases, ranging from Lumbar Herniated Disc, Spinal Tumor, Spinal
Tuberculosis, Scoliosis, to Spondylolisthesis, have been done with
outstanding success. Patients with spinal Fracture, Pelvic Fracture,
and/or Limbs Fracture are routinely treated according to AO
Principles of Fracture Management. Other patients have received
superior results after operation of reserving limb for Malignant
Bone Tumor, surgical treatment of Spine Tumor by Anterior and
Posterior Approach, excision of Sacral/Pelvic Tumor, minimally
invasive spinal surgeries, and/or arthroscopic surgeries. Through
these surgeries our division has made a considerable profit margin
and has earned several prizes for technology innovation awarded by
Shijitan Hospital.
Besides patient care, the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery also
prides itself as a site for academic research and health care
education. In terms of academic activity, we are continuously
involved in scientific and clinical research and have authored or
co-authored a number of peer-viewed publications and presentations.
In terms of teaching, we provide topnotch didactic and clinical
educational opportunities for medical students from Peking
University Health Science Center, as well as students from other
medical institutions. In addition, we facilitate the training and
development of tens of orthopaedic professionals form all over
China, who benefit from the expertise of some of the most skilled
orthopaedics in the nation.
